History of the College
The College of Medicine traces its origins to Kaohsiung Medical College, which was established in 1954. In August 1999, following approval by the Ministry of Education, the institution was upgraded and renamed Kaohsiung Medical University, and the College of Medicine became one of its six founding colleges.
The College places strong emphasis on integrating the humanities with medicine, nurturing students who embody professionalism, strong communication skills, a commitment to lifelong learning, and the ability to provide holistic, patient-centered care.
To support the College's development, five administrative divisions have been established: Academic Affairs, Research and Development, International Affairs, Student Affairs, and General Affairs.
The College comprises the following departments, graduate institutes, and degree programs: the School of Medicine, the School of Post Baccalaureate Medicine, the Department of Respiratory Therapy, the Department of Sports Medicine, the Department of Renal Care (discontinued since the 2019–20 academic year), the Graduate Institute of Medicine, the Graduate Institute of Clinical Medicine, the M.Sc. Program in Tropical Medicine, the Ph.D. Program in Translational Medicine, the Ph.D. Program in Environmental and Occupational Medicine, and the Ph.D. Program in Biomedical Engineering.
Since the 2007 academic year, the College has actively promoted research and established the Tropical Medicine Research Center, the Sepsis Research Center, the Research Center for Medical Education, the Diabetes Research Center, the Hepatitis Research Center, the Lipid Science and Aging Research Center, and the Orthopaedic Research Center.
